This article describes the experience of Tony Allen, a Black scholar at the University of Delaware in the late 1980s and early '90s, and the impact of James Newton, the first Black graduate with a master of fine arts from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, on the university's Black community. Allen recalls the exhaustion and isolation he felt as a Black student on a majority-white campus, where fellow Black individuals were scarce. However, James Newton played a pivotal role in supporting and empowering Black scholars, ultimately contributing to the success of the university's Black American Studies program. His influence transformed the university, providing a sense of belonging and opportunity for Black students and scholars.
