During the 2021-2022 academic year, Dr. Barber will complete her first book manuscript as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Getty Research Institute in Los Angeles. Every
year since 1985 the Getty Research Institute has welcomed scholars, artists,
and other cultural figures from around the world to work in residence on projects that bear upon its annual research theme. Well known for
its collection of ancient and Western art and artifacts, the Getty launched an
unprecedented multimillion-dollar African American Art History Initiative in
2018 in order to expand the study of American art and its many facets. Dr. Barber will be part of a prestigious cohort working under the research theme, "Fragments." Her first book charts an important
new genealogy of black women’s art. She is Assistant Professor of Africana Studies and Art History at the University of Delaware.
