Biography
Born and raised in the village of Port Penn, Delaware, the roads and homes of which were used as routes and safehouses along Harriet Tubman’s Freedom Trail. It is only fitting that those roads have led Dominique here: to the Department of Africana Studies as a first-year MA Student. They received dual BAs in English and Africana Studies at the University of Delaware in 2022. Their senior thesis titled, From the Classroom to the Community: Pedagogy in the Presence of Disconnect, was presented at the 2022 Richard Macksey and subsequently published by Johns Hopkins University.
Originally going to school to become a secondary English teacher, Dominique would go on to leave the field due to immense philosophical disagreements with the Western system of education. Informed by their teaching experiences and a wide array of educational data that reflects a disconnect between academy and community, their research interests center around the deconstruction of Eurocentricity present in the education system through the establishment of revolutionary pedagogical approaches on a national level.
In addition to this, Dominique’s scholarship extends into works on topics such as studies and critiques of Whiteness, the social wage accompanied by the identity of Whiteness, and its historical developments and manifestations. In conjunction with the aforementioned, they also are in the development of blueprints for discourse on race in the classroom setting and our greater society, navigating white fragility, and investigations of the intersections of gender, sexuality, race, and class as they inform and construct lived realities. Their research also includes an emphasis on teacher education, the creation of instructional segments and units, as well as the incorporation of behavioral therapies and mindfulness practice in K-12 education.
A creative spirit at heart, Dominique shines their light through many mediums including, but not limited to, the following: academic scholarship, writing (prose, fiction, lyrics, short stories, novels, poetry), photography, and a burgeoning development in the areas of music and blogging.
