Biography
Solyana Bekele is a first-year M.A. student in the Department of Africana Studies. Solyana received her B.A. in political science from Hampton University. Originally from Ethiopia, Solyana moved to Alexandria, VA in 2010. Solyana’s research interests include the Black Power Movement of the 196os, the Black Arts Movement, Marxism, and scholars of decolonization and resistance like Kwame Nkrumah, Walter Rodney, Franz Fanon, etc.
Outside of academics, Solyana is involved in community organizing as a member of the African People’s Socialist Party in Philadelphia. She also serves as the Managing Editor for The Burning Spear newspaper, and as a podcast host for Black Power Talks. Solyana has experience in holding virtual political education sessions, emceeing the One Africa! One Nation Book Fair & Marketplace in Philadelphia, and field reporting for The Burning Spear newspaper.
